An alternative to replacing a sound kitchen

A fresh colour while retaining the cupboards and layout

Homes around Wilmslow, Alderley Edge, Prestbury, Knutsford, Hale and Bowdon often contain sound fitted, handmade or in-frame kitchens whose cabinetry remains valuable even when the colour has become dated.

Professional repainting can change the character of the room without replacing sound cupboards or disturbing a carefully planned layout. David assesses the construction, condition and existing finish before providing a firm written quotation.

The service can suit handmade and in-frame cabinetry, traditional timber kitchens, painted shaker kitchens, sound MDF units and suitable factory-finished doors.

How the work is organised

Most preparation and finishing takes place in the workshop

The service is organised to reduce fuss and greatly limit the amount of work carried out inside the kitchen.

Assessment and quotation

David checks the kitchen, discusses the proposed colour and provides a written quotation for the agreed work.

Careful removal

The doors and drawer fronts are identified, removed and transported to the workshop by David.

Preparation and hand-finishing

The removable pieces are prepared and coated away from the property. Fixed frames, end panels and plinths are completed in the kitchen.

Refitting and final check

The finished doors and drawer fronts are returned, refitted in their correct positions and checked.

A substantial hand-painted finish

The standard service uses small rollers and brushes rather than a quick two-coat spray specification.

  • Typically five to eight coats of water-based products
  • Preparation selected for the individual surface and condition
  • Doors and drawer fronts finished away from the property
  • Typical project timescale of around 10–15 working days

Kitchen styles and construction

Handmade, in-frame and sound manufactured kitchens

The maker's name matters less than the kitchen's construction, stability and present condition, although retaining high-quality cabinetry can be particularly worthwhile.

Timber kitchens

Sound pine, oak, ash, maple and other timber kitchens can often retain their character while gaining a completely different colour.

Painted shaker doors

Previously painted shaker kitchens may be suitable when the existing coating remains stable and compatible with the new system.

Sound MDF

MDF is common in factory-painted kitchens and can usually be professionally repainted when it remains dry, firm and undamaged.

Wrapped doors

Where plastic film has bubbled or lifted, it may sometimes be possible to remove it and repaint the sound MDF beneath after assessment.

Colour and finish

Warm neutrals, soft off-whites, deep greens and almost any suitable shade

Daylight, worktops, flooring and adjoining rooms all affect how a cupboard colour will appear in the finished kitchen.

Colours can be matched or mixed in shades inspired by Farrow & Ball, Little Greene, Dulux and the extensive RAL range, using the professional water-based system selected for the cupboard surface.

Matt, satin and eggshell appearances can be discussed. Matt finishes are particularly popular and, with the right professional product, can still provide a practical wipeable surface.

Common questions

Before arranging a quotation

How much does kitchen cupboard painting typically cost in this area?

A typical complete kitchen project is around £4,750. The exact written quotation depends on the kitchen's size, construction, existing finish, condition, preparation and colour change.

Which parts of Cheshire do you cover?

The service area includes Wilmslow, Alderley Edge, Prestbury, Knutsford, Hale, Hale Barns, Bowdon and surrounding villages. Include your full location when making an enquiry.

Can handmade, timber and factory-painted kitchens be repainted?

Often, yes. Traditional timber, handmade cabinetry and sound factory-painted MDF kitchens can all be suitable when their doors, joints and fixed units remain stable. David checks every kitchen before quoting.

How much of the work happens at the property?

Around 90% is completed away from the property. Only the fixed frames, end panels, plinths and other non-removable sections need to be prepared and finished in the kitchen.
